Three men were arrested in Lawrence on Saturday after performing and filming a fake stabbing several yards away from thousands of people attending the annual Feast of the Three Saints.
Josette Osorio, 19, of Haverhill and Vincent Bencivenga, 29, of Lawrence were arrested for disturbing the peace and making false reports to the police. Mark Hatch, 48, of Methuen was arrested for resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer, disturbing the peace, and making false reports to the police.
Lawrence police officers responded to the area of 35 Essex St. after receiving a report for a male suspect wearing a long black trench coat - similar to those worn by the 1999 Columbine High School shooters - and carrying a machete that was dripping blood, police said.
Witnesses told police that the suspects, three men and a woman, were last seen walking into the festival -- a three-day event that draws in over 10,000 people a night.
“A lot of people saw them, people access that road to get to the festival or sometimes park in that direction,” Chief John Romero said.
Officers working at the feast were directed toward Osorio and Bencivenga by an elderly woman “in hysterics pointing to the suspects in fear.’’
Osorio told the officers that Hatch was in charge of the filming and that “the knife was real but the incident was staged, to be recorded and placed on the Internet.”
Officers attempted to stop Hatch, who fled through the crowd and weaved through several surrounding residences’ yards and buildings before being found outside 174 Garden St. hiding under a Jeep, police said.
