By PoliceOne Staff BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Newly-released video shows a group of deputies take down a man who placed a chokehold on a female officer inside a detention center.
Ronald Reid is seen in footage obtained by WCSC with his arm around the neck of a female officer, apparently taking her hostage.
The incident began when Reid was pulled over Sept. 12 for running a red light. Moncks Corner Police said Reid attacked officers trying to place him in a patrol car, forcing them to deploy a TASER two times.
After subduing Reid, officers transported him to the Hill-Finklea Detention Center, where he was momentarily placed in a room for further questioning. When officers returned to the room, they found urine on the floor and Reid's pants around his waist.
A female officer escorted Reid to the restroom to change him into a detention center uniform when Reid grabbed and choked her, the incident report said. He told authorities that he would not hurt the officer if he was allowed to talk to his girlfriend.
One deputy told Reid he would let him make the call, placing his phone on a nearby desk. When Reid looked at the phone, the deputy deployed pepper spray as the group of deputies pulled the female sergeant away.
Reid was charged with taking hostages in connection to the incident, the station reported. He also faces a slew of charges stemming from the traffic stop, including providing false information and resisting arrest.
