LEBANON, Ky. — A Marion County officer was gunned down Wednesday morning when a man opened fire during a traffic stop.
Investigators say around 2 a.m. Marion County Deputy Carl Anthony Rakes came up behind a 2007 Kia that was stopped on US 68. While Rakes was walking to the car, the driver opened fire.
Deputy Anthony Rakes, 31, managed to return fire before the suspect fled on foot, according to Central Ky News. A police spokesman said Rakes was able to contact dispatchers and let them know what happened. He died during surgery at Springview Hospital.
Suspect Dewayne Shipp, 49, was later arrested by police.
Shipp’s mother had called authorities in Breckinridge County earlier to report that her son had stolen her 2007 KIA, was armed with a gun and was headed to the home of his ex-wife and daughter, according to police.
Rakes had served with Marion County Sheriff’s Office for six years, and the Lebanon PD before that.
“He always told me, ‘I want to be a police officer someday,’” Sgt. Elisa McHolan said. “I told him when we were hiring and he got on. “He was such a quiet, soft-spoken guy. He was real laid back. Everybody loved him. This is just awful.”
