CLEVELAND — Dash cam released Monday shows a police pursuit that resulted in the deaths of two suspects.
Gunshots can be heard in the video, as well as officers saying “shots fired, shots fired.”
The incident has heavy local media attention on whether the 13 Cleveland officers involved were justified in firing 137 rounds into a car carrying 30-year-old Malissa Williams and 43-year-old Timothy Russell, who both died as a result, according to Fox8.
The Plain Dealer reported Saturday that police had said the pursuit began because two people shot at a police officer in downtown Cleveland.
However, investigators did not find a gun inside the suspects’ vehicle, and a civil rights investigation of the incident may take place, according to Cleveland.com.
Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath called it a "very regrettable situation, not just for the community but for the Police Department," at a news conference Friday.
"It's really with a heavy heart. I can't tell you how much this hurts the Cleveland Division of Police," McGrath said. "We work so hard. We worked so hard to make things good. Something like this, I'm not saying it makes us look bad because the investigation isn't completed yet, but it's a real challenge for us."
The reason for the 20-minute pursuit, that ended in a head-on collision with a cruiser is still under investigation.
