Newly-released dash cam video shows police kill a North Idaho fugitive who struck an officer with his vehicle.
The incident began March 12 when Idaho State Police corporal Michael Thomas Keys came upon the vehicle of Justin Earl Nicholas Todd, 33, a fugitive wanted on eluding police and being a habitual offender.
Keys pursued Todd with assistance from Post Falls officers Aaron Ogle and Bradley Johnson, according to the Spokesman Review. The pursuit lasted 20 minutes and ended in a cul-de-sac in Hayden, where dash cam and surveillance video from a neighboring home captured the fatal shooting.
In the video, Todd appears to suddenly back up, then lurch forward to strike Keys, who jumps onto the hood of the car and fires bullets through the windshield. Ogle and Johnson also opened fire, killing Todd.
Todd had been named "fugitive of the week" by the North Idaho Violent Crimes Task Force and was found to have multiple weapons in his vehicle, including a brass knuckles/TASER combination and a knife.
Authorities said last week that the use of force was justified and no charges will be filed against the officers.
"They followed their training and they followed the professionalism that we expect from our employees," Post Falls police Chief Scot Haug said. "It is a very unfortunate situation and our thoughts are with the family, but I think the officers acted appropriately."
