The beaches of Seaside Heights were shut down Sunday night after strong rip currents nearly drowned several swimmers, including a cop who tried to rescue two of them, the popular shore town's police chief said.

Seaside Heights Police Chief Tommy Boyd told NBC 4 New York that he locked the boardwalk gates in order to save lives.

Lifeguards were not on duty Sunday. The season ended with Labor Day weekend.

I remember back when a storm was coming towards the East Coast and it was headed for Jersey. Governor Christie did the infamous press conference where he says..."get off the beach, you're done. The storm is coming". Maybe he should've done a retread of that warning so these six idiots (minus the cop) would've stayed out of the water. And thus wouldn't have needed rescuing.
